The Isle of Skye based Torabhaig Distillery has today announced the launch of its fourth Legacy Series release.
Torabhaig – Sound of Sleat (46% ABV) is a peated (78+ PPM) single malt Scotch whisky, which was matured in a combination of new American oak casks and ex-Bourbon casks.
This latest release takes its name from the narrow sea that runs beside the distillery and shares its name with the Sleat Peninsula, on which the distillery sits. Known as The Garden of Skye, the Sleat Peninsula is the southernmost part of the island, lying closest to the mainland and separated only by the Sound of Sleat.
The Torabhaig Legacy Series is a collection of single malts that charts the distillery’s journey toward its 10 Year Old release, while showcasing the experimental steps involved in establishing a future flagship expression that embodies the house style of well-tempered peat.
Torabhaig — Sound of Sleat is said to offer aromas of orange, apricot, popcorn, maritime seaweed, pipe tobacco, honey, vanilla and boiled sweets on the nose. The palate reveals notes of oak spice, sweet bonfire smoke, honey, vanilla, sea salt, white pepper and sweet spice.
Torabhaig has also unveiled new label artwork, created exclusively for the distillery by local artists. The first of which, for Sound of Sleat, has been painted by Skye-based artist Ellis O’Connor.
Commenting on the launch, Neil MacLeod Mathieson, Torabhaig whisky maker, said: “Our journey to a 10-year-old expression continues and for Sound of Sleat we’re returning to a classic ex-bourbon cask profile, enhanced by the addition of a crisp spice edge from the new American oak barrels, without losing the elegance and intricacy our fans have come to expect from a Torabhaig whisky. There is plenty of oak spice, citrus and maritime saltiness alongside a newfound waxiness we’ve discovered as our spirit continues to mature. This expression is a journey in itself as each wave of flavour washes in.”
Torabhaig – Sound of Sleat, will be available later this month from specialist retailers, for a RRP of £57.00.
