The Distillery at Coleburn has unveiled its first collection of whisky bottlings, marking a significant new chapter in the revival of one of Speyside’s historic sleeping distilleries.
The three inaugural releases in the Local Heros collection are designed as a gateway into the ongoing series, the Distillery at Coleburn and the long-term plan to create a whisky resort.
Local Heros brings together some of the world’s most exceptional whiskies under a single unifying theme: celebrating the whisky community itself – the makers, the custodians, and the enthusiasts, past and present – whose passion and craft continue to connect local traditions with a global spirit of unity.
Bottled at the distillery’s historic Speyside site, the core trilogy – Sweet Peat, Big Smoke, and Sherry Bomb – each boasts a distinct flavour profile:
Local Heros Sherry Bomb (46% ABV) is a rich, full-bodied whisky matured in Oloroso and refill casks. It opens with aromas of spice, honey, red apple and cinnamon over toasted malt. On the palate, expect layers of dried fruit, hazelnut and stewed plums, leading to a smooth, fruity, and elegant finish.
Local Heros Sweet Peat (46% ABV) offers a gentle introduction to smoky whisky. Caramel, vanilla, and plum pudding feature on the nose, followed by honey, pear drops and banana on the palate. Light smoke and hints of tobacco balance the sweetness, culminating in a long, sweet and smoky finish.
Local Heros Big Smoke (46% ABV) is the boldest expression in the first release of the collection. It opens with notes of cherry, vanilla, lemon and coastal breeze. The palate reveals medicinal smoke, banana and sea salt, with a lingering, smoky finish.
The name Local Heros is a tribute to the people who have helped shape Scotland’s whisky legacy – the individuals and communities keeping traditions alive. It also carries a personal resonance for distillery co-owners Mark and Dale Winchester, who made a brief appearance in the iconic 1983 film Local Hero, shot at locations across Scotland.
Commenting on the launch, Keith Cruickshank, Master Distiller at Coleburn, said: “Local Heros is about more than whisky; it’s about the people and the landscapes that have created something extraordinary. From the craftspeople who keep traditions alive to the communities that have shaped Scotland’s whisky story, this collection is a celebration of collaboration, legacy and place. With Sweet Peat, Big Smoke and Sherry Bomb, we aimed to create whiskies that are approachable yet full of character – an invitation to be part of Coleburn’s new chapter.”
Local Heros Sherry Bomb, Sweet Peat and Big Smoke are now available from thewhiskyresort.com, localheros.shop and amazon.co.uk for the respective RRPs of £50.00, £52.50 and £55.00.
