The Edinburgh based Wemyss Family Spirits has announced the launch of the third iteration of its Velvet Fig release, from its award-winning malts range.
Wemyss Malts Velvet Fig – 2025 Edition (46% ABV) is a 12 Year Old blended malt Scotch whisky, produced using whisky matured in first-fill Sherry hogsheads and butts, sourced from The Speyside Cooperage.
Matured exclusively in six first-fill Sherry casks filled in 2012, the whisky underwent a five-month marrying period in Sherry-seasoned oak, which is said to have imparted a richer, more velvety flavour profile.
The 2025 Edition is described as offering aromas of fig, blackberry, milk chocolate, marzipan and walnut on the nose, followed by notes of ripe fruits, nutmeg, ginger, chestnut, warming cinnamon and sweet oak on the palate.
Returning by popular demand after previous sell-out editions in 2014 and 2020, the third Velvet Fig release has been crafted by Wemyss Malts Blender, Isabella Wemyss. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Wemyss Family Spirits has been creating blended whiskies since 2005, with Isabella at the forefront, drawing on decades of experience.
Commenting on the launch, Isabella said: “This release continues the legacy of the Velvet Fig series and remains true to previous editions with its fruit-forward, sherry-led profile and small-batch quality. We carefully selected six first-fill Sherry casks – three hogsheads and three butts – filled between June and November 2012. Typically, we marry whiskies in the casks for a few weeks, but for this release, we took a different approach, allowing the whiskies to fully mature in Sherry-seasoned oak for five months, bringing out a high-quality flavour and texture.”
Wemyss Malts Velvet Fig – 2025 Edition will be available from the Wemyss website and select specialist retailers from November 26th, for a RRP of £57.00.
