The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) has announced the launch of two limited-edition single malt releases as part of its new Diptych Collection, an exploration of how wood influences whisky.
The Diptych Collection brings together two single casks from the same distillery, distilled on the same day in 1994, initially matured for 28 years in Oloroso Sherry butts before undergoing additional maturation in first-fill Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks – one American oak, the other Spanish.
SMWS ‘The Iberian’ – Cask No. 96.41 (52.2% ABV) is said to open with notes of sandalwood, cedar and polished leather, followed by rich dark fruits spiced with cloves and ginger.
SMWS ‘The American’ – Cask No. 96.42 (50.9% ABV) is described as delivering subtle sherry notes alongside mango, cinnamon bun, earthy smoke, rich chocolate and pear tart.
Commenting on the launch, Euan Campbell, Head of Whisky Creation at the SMWS, said: “Diptych is a celebration of how different oak types can transform whisky in fascinating ways. These two casks share the same DNA – same distillery, same year, same initial maturation – but their final chapter in American versus Spanish oak PX casks has created two distinct personalities. It’s a rare opportunity to explore the profound influence of wood on whisky, presented as a work of liquid art.”
The Diptych Collection bottles are now available from the SMWS website, for a RRP of £450.00 each.
