Old Forester has announced the launch of its latest 117 Series release, which pays homage to the distillery’s storied past as one of the few producers legally permitted to make whiskey for medicinal purposes during Prohibition.
Old Forester 117 Series: Prohibition Era Still Proof (65% ABV) is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon that nods to the historical fact that Old Forester was once distilled at 130 proof during the 100-day distiller’s holiday a few years before Prohibition was repealed.
In the 1930s, a select group of government-authorised distillers — including Old Forester — were granted licences to replenish whiskey stocks for medicinal use.
The release coincided with Repeal Day, on December 5th, which marked the end of Prohibition in 1933, when the 21st Amendment restored Americans’ right to enjoy bourbon.
Commenting on the launch, Caleb Trigo, Assistant Master Distiller at Old Forester, said: “This release is a tribute to the ingenuity that allowed Old Forester to endure and emerge stronger during one of the most challenging periods for American whiskey. This bourbon offers a glimpse into the intensity and authenticity of our Prohibition heritage.”
Old Forester 117 Series: Prohibition Era Still Proof is now available in limited quantities via the distillery’s website and from selected retailers across the US, for a RRP of $64.99.
