Hatozaki Whisky has announced the launch of a new permanent addition to its portfolio, which is said to showcase a rare finishing technique.

Hatozaki Triple Cask Reserve (46% ABV) is a non-age-stated world whisky, initially matured in ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry barrels, before being finished for six months in Umeshu plum liqueur casks.

Known in Japan as ume, Umeshu is a traditional liqueur made by steeping local green plums in alcohol. This additional maturation is said to impart delicate layers of zesty citrus, tea-like herbal notes and a subtle plum sweetness.

As a true “world whisky”, Hatozaki Triple Cask Reserve brings together global distilling influences, refined at the Kaikyō Distillery in Japan using techniques honed over generations. Kimio Yonezawa — a fourth-generation distiller — has spent decades mastering the craft of whisky-making and is committed to upholding the high standards set by the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association. The resulting spirit honours time-honoured Japanese blending artistry while embracing a worldwide whisky heritage.

Commenting on the launch, Kimio Yonezawa, Master Distiller, said: “Finishing a whisky in Umeshu casks is rare in the whisky world, and I was eager to see how the Japanese plum liqueur’s flavours would transform the blend. The Umeshu influence adds an extra layer of depth and gentle sweetness that truly sets Triple Cask Reserve apart from more traditional whiskies.”

Hatozaki Triple Cask Reserve is now available from selected specialist retailers, for a RRP of £58.00.
