Irish Distillers has announced the launch of a new, limited-edition distillery-exclusive release from its Midleton Very Rare range, marking the bicentennial anniversary of the Midleton Distillery.
Midleton Very Rare 200th Anniversary Edition (54.7% ABV) is a 28 Year Old Irish single pot still whiskey, which introduces a Japanese Mizunara oak influence for the first time in a Midleton Very Rare expression — a testament to the distillery’s long-standing commitment to innovation and craftsmanship.
This limited-edition release concludes a year-long celebration of the distillery’s 200th anniversary. First established by the Murphy family in 1825, Midleton Distillery in Co. Cork has spent two centuries honing its reputation for excellence. This new expression pays tribute to that heritage of craftsmanship, expertise and dedication.
Master Distiller Kevin O’Gorman set out to create a whiskey that not only embodies the complexity and refinement synonymous with Midleton Very Rare, but also honours two centuries of whiskey-making mastery. Central to this ambition is the use of all three distinctive single pot still styles produced at Midleton — a nod to the distillery’s time-honoured techniques and deep-rooted legacy.
In crafting this special release, O’Gorman hand-selected five exceptional casks, including a Mizunara oak puncheon filled more than six years ago with a bespoke batch of whiskey previously matured in American oak. Blending this exquisite and highly prized cask with a selection of first- and second-fill American oak casks has allowed each distillate to express its full character, resulting in a whiskey of remarkable depth, harmony and structure — a true showcase of Midleton’s artistry.
The introduction of rare and revered Japanese Mizunara oak, never before used in Midleton Very Rare, adds a bold new dimension. Its distinctive influence brings vibrant notes of sandalwood and fresh wood spices, while enhancing fruit notes of pineapple, kiwi, and lemon. These flavours are complemented by the vanilla, toffee, and heather honey typical of American oak. The result is a whiskey of exceptional balance, where innovation and tradition come together in perfect harmony.
Commenting on the launch, Kevin O’Gorman, Master Distiller, said: “The 200th Anniversary Edition is both a celebration and an evolution, remaining true to Midleton Very Rare’s elegant and sophisticated nature whilst embracing the opportunity to explore something new. The Mizunara oak cask brings a vibrant, layered flavour that perfectly complements the liquid and legacy of the brand. It is an honour to share this whiskey as we celebrate 200 years of excellence at Midleton Distillery.”
Limited to just 636 bottles, Midleton Very Rare 200th Anniversary Edition is now available for pre-order via the Midleton Distillery Collection website for a RRP of £1,220. It will also be available in limited quantities at the Midleton Distillery Experience in Cork and at the Jameson Distillery Bow St. in Dublin from December 16th.
