The Japan-based Kirin Holdings has agreed to sell its Four Roses Bourbon distillery to US wine producer and distributor E & J Gallo Winery.
The deal, valued at $775m, will see ownership of the Kentucky-based bourbon brand transfer to Gallo later this year, subject to regulatory approval. Kirin did not disclose any further financial details.
Kirin said the sale follows a strategic review of its global beverage portfolio, as the group looks to focus investment on its core beer, spirits and non-alcoholic categories across the Asia-Pacific region.
Founded in 1888, Four Roses is produced at its distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, and has been part of Kirin’s portfolio since 2002. Under Kirin’s ownership, the brand experienced a strong revival, expanding its US distribution and re-establishing a solid presence in key export markets, notably Japan and Europe.
The announcement comes as US distillers face growing uncertainty over trade tariffs and a decline in alcohol consumption. According to the Kentucky Distillers’ Association, a record 16 million barrels of bourbon are currently stored in warehouses across the state. In December, Jim Beam announced it would pause production at its distillery in Clermont, Kentucky, for a year.
Commenting on the agreement, an E & J Gallo Winery spokesperson, said: “As we progress through the regulatory process and await a closing date, we are extremely excited about this acquisition and the opportunity to welcome Four Roses into our portfolio. No changes are planned to operations, production or distribution. We will have no further comment until after closing.”
The sale is expected to be completed in the second half of 2026.
