The Melbourne, Australia-based Starward Distillery has announced the launch of a new limited-edition expression created in collaboration with Lagavulin.
Starward x Lagavulin (48% ABV) is an Australian single malt whisky initially matured in red wine barrels before being finished in ex-Lagavulin Islay single malt Scotch whisky casks.
Celebrated by enthusiasts around the world, Lagavulin is renowned for its distinctive, rich and intensely smoky peated single malt Scotch whisky. The Starward team sourced barrels from the Scottish distillery, marrying the tropical fruit notes of its signature red wine barrel-matured whisky with the earthy, coastal peat character imparted by the Lagavulin casks.
This limited-edition release is described as a richly flavoured Australian single malt, balancing ripe nectarine and charred pineapple with wisps of coastal peat and a lingering, smouldering dry oak finish.
Commenting on the launch, Starward founder David Vitale said: “My earliest inspiration for Starward was to create a deliciously distinctive whisky. While we certainly achieved that with our red wine barrel-matured style, what whisky better epitomises distinctively delicious than Lagavulin? Sourcing these barrels to create this exciting expression gives us a magical opportunity to celebrate the very best of Australian curiosity and Scottish tradition.”
Starward x Lagavulin will be available from March at selected retailers, for a RRP of £125.00.
