Independent bottler The Netherfield, located on the historic Netherfield Estate in Strathaven, South Lanarkshire, has announced the expansion of its portfolio with the launch of a new premium, craft vodka. The release marks the debut of its newly created Laboratory of Absence Collection and draws on the founders’ Siberian heritage.
Black Lake Vodka (40% ABV) unites Siberian tradition with Scottish craftsmanship. It takes inspiration from the ancestral homeland of founders Roman Sayapin and Radmila Istomina, whose lineage traces back to the Siberian Tatars — a nomadic people defined by exploration and resilience.
Renowned for The Netherfield Atelier’s independently bottled single malts and small-batch blended malt Scotch whiskies — presented within the Archive of Presence Collection and drawn from hand-selected casks quietly matured on the Georgian estate — the company now turns its attention to the art of refinement through omission.
Crafted for those who seek discovery and adventure, Black Lake Vodka begins with an ultra-premium spirit refined on the estate through a distinctive dual-filtration process. The first stage, freeze filtration, pays tribute to an ancestral Siberian ritual in which raw spirit was poured over metal bars left outdoors in the depths of winter, allowing the intense cold and frozen steel to draw out impurities.
The spirit then undergoes the classic Russian charcoal filtration method, developed in the 18th century. The synergy of these combined techniques removes impurities, delivering exceptional clarity, smoothness and purity.
After years of travelling the world, driven by a passion for Scotch whisky and a fascination with the world’s ‘Archives of Taste’, Roman and Radmila settled in Scotland and founded The Netherfield in 2023. Within the historic stables of the Netherfield Estate, they began developing a distillery — creating a new chapter while remaining deeply connected to their heritage.
In Scotland, they recognised echoes of Siberia: untamed landscapes, crisp air, towering hills, dense forests, clear waters and a strong sense of community.
Their grandparents were master vodka distillers dedicated to achieving exceptional purity. By harnessing Siberia’s frozen climate as a natural filter, they produced spirits of remarkable smoothness. Today, that legacy is honoured through the recreation of time-honoured methods using Scotland’s finest ingredients and pristine water. The final spirit is frost-filtered to achieve an impeccably smooth finish — blending Siberian soul with Scottish spirit.
Commenting on The Netherfield Bond, Roman Sayapin, Founder & Curator, said: “We did not begin in a distillery; we began in motion. After decades exploring the world’s Archives of Taste — from Asian tea fields to European vineyards — we came to understand that a great spirit is a structural composition. At Netherfield, we are not simply bottling liquid; we are shaping its volume and presence. In the Archive, we turn the character up. In the Laboratory, we pursue silence.”
Commenting on Black Lake Vodka, Radmila Istomina, Co-Founder & Partner in Crime, added: “We believe a great spirit should be a definitive signal, free from sensory noise. At the Netherfield Atelier, our work resolves the dialogue between liquid and the senses. Through sub-zero physics, we achieve what we call the ‘Silence of the Frost’ — a spirit that does not merely sit on the palate, but settles the senses.”
The Netherfield will officially unveil Black Lake Vodka at ProWein 2026 in Düsseldorf (15–17 March). Distributors, importers and members of the trade are invited to visit Stand B44 / Hall 5 for an exclusive first taste.
Black Lake Vodka will be available from April via blacklake.vodka and selected specialist retailers, for a RRP of £35.00.
