Elixir Distillers has announced that it is entering an exciting new chapter in the history of the Speyside based Tormore Distillery, which it acquired from Pernod Ricard in 2022, with the launch of its first core range of whiskies.
Tormore Timeless (43% ABV) is a non-age-stated single malt Scotch whisky, predominantly matured in ex-Bourbon casks. It is said to deliver notes of fresh vanilla, lemon zest, sweet spice, honeysuckle and peach tea.
Tormore 12 Year Old (46% ABV) is a single malt Scotch whisky matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon, ex-Sherry and toasted American white oak casks. It is said to offer notes of peach cobbler with custard, soft spice, vanilla fudge, poached pears and cream, toasted almonds and coconut.
Tormore 16 Year Old Sherry Cask (46% ABV) is a single malt Scotch whisky matured in a combination of refill American and European oak Sherry casks. It is said to deliver notes of jammy sweetness, nuts, buttered brioche, sticky dates, demerara fudge and lemon oil.
Since production began in 1959, Tormore has been known for its elegant and refined character. For decades, however, much of its spirit remained hidden within some of the world’s most beloved blended whiskies, and few people realised the original ambition for the distillery to establish itself as a producer of exceptional single malt whisky.
Designed by renowned architect Sir Albert Richardson, Tormore was built in 1959 as far more than just a whisky distillery. It was conceived as a vibrant village where people and whisky-making could thrive together. Richardson included a village hall and workers’ cottages, all complemented by sculpted topiary gardens, a musical clock tower and even a curling pond.
Now under the stewardship of Elixir Distillers, Distillery Manager Polly Logan, Head Blender Oliver Chilton and co-owner Sukhinder Singh have taken the time to explore the distillery’s maturing stocks to understand how they can be enhanced and brought to life as single malts through careful re-casking into fresh Bourbon barrels and a variety of Sherry casks.
Commenting on the launch, Oliver Chilton said: “When Elixir Distillers became custodians of this Speyside icon, we were captivated by the history and heritage of its light yet fruit-forward spirit, as well as the brilliant people who make it. We didn’t want to overshadow its wonderful character but instead enhance the distillery’s natural personality through careful cask selection, allowing Tormore to shine once again as a single malt and serve as the finest representation of its community.”
Speaking about the distillery’s future, Polly Logan, added: “We’ve been making small yet effective adjustments to our processes to ensure the spirit we produce today creates the whisky we want for the future. We have lengthened fermentation times, carefully selected new yeast strains and slowed distillation. These are all deliberate refinements that help us preserve those bright peach and pear notes, while producing a spirit that works in perfect harmony with our maturation programme.”
Tormore Timeless, Tormore 12 Year Old and Tormore 16 Year Old Sherry Cask will be available from June 15th through specialist retailers, for the respective RRPs of £41.95, £54.95 and £79.95.
