The Islay-based Laphroaig Distillery has announced the return of its 15 Year Old expression, which was last part of the distillery’s core range in 2009 before being discontinued.
Laphroaig 15 Year Old (46% ABV) is a single malt Scotch whisky matured in ex-American oak Bourbon barrels.
The re-released whisky, which now sits alongside Laphroaig’s core 10 and 18 Year Old age-stated expressions, is said to capture the unmistakable character of the distillery, combining the whisky maker’s signature smokiness and sea salt notes with a surprising touch of sweetness. The additional years of maturation are said to have allowed the signature peat smoke to soften and integrate, creating a beautifully balanced spirit.
On the nose, the whisky opens with vibrant citrus aromas layered with subtle dried hay, barbecue smoke and soft hints of vanilla and clove. The palate delivers a bold wave of sea salt and smoke, complemented by cracked black pepper and warming spices, including cinnamon, clove and coriander. A fruitier character emerges towards the finish, with juicy peach and ripe grapefruit providing a refreshing lift. The finish is long, smoky and mouthwatering, balancing savoury depth with gentle sweetness.
Commenting on the launch, Dr Calum Fraser, Master Blender, Scotch and Irish at Suntory Global Spirits, said: “We’ve been waiting very patiently for our whisky to be ready to bring back the legend that is Laphroaig 15 Year Old. Alongside the 10 Year Old and 18 Year Old, we can now complete the set. This whisky shows how beautifully Laphroaig evolves with time, resulting in a markedly different level of complexity. The peat smoke has mellowed and married with bright citrus and gentle sweetness, while still retaining the unmistakably bold character that defines Laphroaig.”
Laphroaig 15 Year Old is now available exclusively via the distillery’s website and The Whisky Shop, ahead of a wider release through other specialist retailers from September, for a RRP of £85.00.
