The Edinburgh-based Wemyss Family Spirits, has announced the launch of an age-stated release of its acclaimed Smoky Shores blended Scotch whisky.

Wemyss Malts Smoky Shores 14 Year Old (46% ABV), which follows the original non-age-stated release of its namesake in 2022, comprises two coastal single malts with very different relationships to peat.

One of the malts has been drawn from a distillery long synonymous with peated malt, its character shaped by a distinctly smoky style. The other is a less familiar peated expression, drawn from a distillery better known for its unpeated house style.

Master Blender Isabella Wemyss selected and married the two from a small parcel of hogsheads, setting one style against the other to recreate the salty, smoky and distinctly coastal profile that made the original Smoky Shores a favourite.

Fourteen years of maturation are said to have evolved the familiar profile while retaining the salty, smoky and citrus-led character of the original. Maturation has deepened the whisky’s savoury complexity and lends it a buttery gold colour, while a thread of citrus keeps the smoke from becoming too heavy – a hallmark of the considered, patient blending that runs through all Wemyss Malts spirits.

Wemyss Malts Smoky Shores 14 Year Old, is described as delivering notes of coastal brine fused with rich, peaty smoke on the nose, with the salt air unmistakable from the first pour and the smoke sitting deep rather than sharp. On the palate, medicinal peat and sea salt lead, harmonised by a subtle zest of orange peel that lifts the whisky and prevents the smoke from dominating.
