The Islay-based Laphroaig Distillery, has announced the launch of the second release in its limited-edition Strong Characters Collection, a series that honours individuals whose vision and bold character have shaped the distillery’s legacy.

Laphroaig 35 Year Old Strong Characters Chapter 2 – Dugald Johnston (43.8% ABV) is a single malt Scotch whisky matured exclusively in American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels, offering a rare opportunity to explore how the distillery’s signature style evolves with extended maturation.

Following the first release in the series, a 33 Year Old dedicated to Laphroaig co-founder Donald Johnston, the new expression honours his son, Dugald Johnston, who inherited the distillery at a young age during one of the most challenging periods in Islay’s history.

Dugald patiently learnt the secrets of whisky-making behind the scenes before officially assuming control on his 21st birthday in 1857. Despite Islay facing economic hardship, the effects of famine and a dwindling population, Dugald’s resolve and determination saw Laphroaig grow in size and reputation. Over the following 20 years, Dugald increased production more than threefold while preserving Laphroaig’s unique character.

The latest release is said to reflect Dugald’s patient and steadfast approach, with the spirit shaped by time and focus. It is described as offering notes of freshly baked pastry, apple and cherry on the nose, followed by smoke, spice and raisin on the palate.

Renowned illustrator Bill Bragg has designed the bottle label and packaging, with striking black-and-white illustrations capturing the resilience, hardship and spirit of life at the historic Islay distillery. The award-winning illustrator spent time at the distillery to ensure his drawings reflected the essence of its legacy, as well as the stories of its people.

Commenting on the launch, Dr Calum Fraser, Master Blender, Scotch and Irish at Suntory Global Spirits, said: “There are very few casks of high-aged Laphroaig whisky left, so creating this 35-Year-Old expression was both a privilege and a responsibility. Every cask considered had to contribute something distinctive and offer complexity, sweetness and smoke. The result is a whisky that showcases a softer, more nuanced side of Laphroaig while remaining true to its unmistakable character.”

Kirsteen Beeston, Senior Global Marketing Director, Scotch and Irish at Suntory Global Spirits, added: “Laphroaig’s legacy and success are shaped by remarkable individuals throughout the centuries, and the Strong Characters series invites fans to discover and celebrate these pioneers. Dugald’s story is one of resilience, conviction and leadership that continues to resonate today, making him a fitting subject for this chapter, and the whisky a perfect expression for whisky drinkers to feel connected to Dugald’s legacy.”

Limited to 5,500 bottles, Laphroaig 35 Year Old Strong Characters Chapter 2 – Dugald Johnston, is now available exclusively from JPHA, ahead of being made available from other selected retailers from September 28th, for a RRP of £880.00.
