Compass Box has announced the launch of a new limited-edition release, marking ten years since the London-based Scotch whisky maker first began publicly advocating for greater transparency in how Scotch whisky recipes are shared with consumers.
Compass Box – This is a 10-Year-Old Whisky (50.5% ABV) is a blended Scotch whisky, comprising three 10 year old single malts: Clynelish (66.5% – first-fill Bourbon casks), Ardnamurchan peated (20.2% – first-fill Bourbon casks) and Ardnamurchan unpeated (13.3% – first-fill Bourbon casks).
By law, the age statement on a blended Scotch whisky can only reflect the age of the youngest whisky in the blend. This means whisky drinkers can rarely be certain exactly what is in their glass or how old each component is.
Compass Box has long advocated for greater transparency in Scotch whisky and has historically disclosed the different component whiskies used to create its blends. The company believes that if a blend contains 10-, 15- and 20-year-old whiskies, the producer should be able to disclose all of this information as part of the recipe.
This practice went against industry regulations. In 2015, the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) challenged Compass Box over the age disclosures for Flaming Heart and This Is Not a Luxury Whisky, informing the company that they did not comply with the rules. This led Compass Box to launch its Scotch Whisky Transparency campaign in 2016, arguing that producers should have the freedom – but not the obligation – to disclose the ages and proportions of every component.
Brought together in This is a 10-Year-Old Whisky, the three single malts deliver something greater than the sum of their parts. Each component is an exceptional single malt in its own right. Clynelish brings its signature waxy, coastal complexity, while the two Ardnamurchan expressions – peated and unpeated – add smoke, depth, structure and a wild Highland character that few distilleries can match.
Compass Box – This is a 10-Year-Old Whisky, is described as light and glossy, delivering notes of Pink Lady apple and rhubarb crumble, custard and pineapple upside-down cake, creamy white chocolate and vanilla panna cotta, soft apricots and dustings of nutmeg.
Commenting on the launch, Nishat Gupte, Compass Box CEO, said: “At Compass Box, we have always believed that whisky lovers deserve better. We go further: every component, its age and its origin are disclosed in full, every time. Every whisky in this bottle is exactly 10 years old. So, we call it what it is. This is a 10-Year-Old Whisky is not a statement about the industry; it’s a statement about us: full transparency, no compromises. It’s simply the way we believe whisky should be made and shared.”
Limited to 3,610 individually numbered bottles, Compass Box – This is a 10-Year-Old Whisky, will be available from September 26th via The Whisky Exchange, for a RRP of £64.00.
