The Japan-based Nikka Whisky, has announced the launch of a new core-range expression, developed as a tribute to the pioneering spirit and legacy of its founder, Masataka Taketsuru.

Nikka Frontier (48% ABV) is a peated blended whisky comprising 51% malt whisky, with an emphasis on heavily peated malts from Nikka’s first distillery, Yoichi, located in Hokkaido. The blend is complemented by the brand’s signature Coffey grain whisky, which is said to provide roundness and balance.

Masataka Taketsuru travelled to Scotland to master the art of whisky-making. Upon returning to Japan, he combined the knowledge and expertise he had acquired in Scotland with Japanese craftsmanship, laying the foundations for authentic whisky production in Japan. His passion and unwavering commitment to craftsmanship remain at the heart of Nikka’s DNA.

The packaging for Nikka Frontier features the letter ‘N’ from the brand’s logo on the front, alongside an embossed motif on the back. The motif represents a traditional Japanese shimenawa — a sacred rope made from twisted rice straw, traditionally placed at the entrance to a shrine. It also pays homage to Taketsuru’s family roots in sake brewing. Continuing this tradition, Nikka places shimenawa above its pot stills as a prayer for safety and quality.

Nikka Frontier will be available later this month, exclusively from Majestic stores in the UK, for a RRP of £33.00 – 50cl.
