Rare Find, the award-winning Edinburgh-based independent bottler renowned for uncovering exceptional single cask whiskies, has announced the launch of a new collection of exceptionally old and rare single cask whiskies, spanning more than three decades of maturation.
The first three releases in the new Rare Find Long Game collection comprise a 36-year-old Macallan, a 38-year-old Tormore and a 34-year-old Deanston. Each celebrates the importance of provenance, the influence of the cask and the remarkable character that can emerge after decades in wood.
This latest selection represents more than age alone. Rare Find has chosen these whiskies for the quality of the spirit, their individual maturation histories and the character retained after such an extended period in cask. With stocks of whisky of this age inherently finite, releases of this calibre offer a rare opportunity to experience spirits whose provenance is measured in decades.
Rare Find Long Game Macallan 36-Year-Old (54.1% ABV) Distilled in 1990 and matured in a refill Sherry butt. Limited to 18 bottles – RRP: £2,500.
The nose is said to deliver notes of honeycomb, Manuka honey and beeswax, creating a rich, waxy sweetness, complemented by ripe Mirabelle plums, peach Melba and milk chocolate. The nose also reveals a gentle hint of white pepper, alongside the earthy character of a dusty dunnage floor.
The palate offers notes of ripe stone fruits and rich tropical fruits, wrapped in a decadently syrupy sweetness. The palate develops notes of golden tobacco leaf, warming cinnamon, polished oak and steeped tea, bringing depth, gentle dryness and a beautifully balanced finish.
Rare Find Long Game Tormore 38-Year-Old (56.4% ABV) Distilled in 1989 and matured in a first-fill Oloroso Sherry barrique. Limited to 198 bottles – RRP: £595.
The nose is described as delivering notes of golden syrup, rich toffee and warm custard, balanced by crisp apple peel. The nose also reveals a gentle earthiness, complemented by soft marshmallow for a delicate confectionery sweetness.
The palate offers notes of crème caramel, alfalfa honey and nostalgic wine gums, supported by bright, polished oak. The palate develops a layer of dry, dusty spice, adding complexity and balance to the whisky’s natural sweetness.
Rare Find Long Game Deanston 34-Year-Old (48.8% ABV) Distilled in 1991 and matured in a second-fill Pedro Ximénez Sherry butt. Limited to 72 bottles – RRP: £325.
The nose is said to deliver notes of lacquered mahogany, stewed plums and Christmas pudding, complemented by roasted almonds and rich berry compote. The nose reveals a touch of mentholated oak, adding a refreshing lift to the deep, mature character.
The palate delivers notes of fruit cake and stewed fruits, layered with polished wood, dried tobacco leaves and old, cracked leather. The palate develops hints of raspberry liqueur and dry cinnamon spice, bringing concentrated red fruit, warmth and structure to this complex, sherry-influenced whisky.
Alongside the new Long Game bottlings, Rare Find will release a 1989 vintage Highland Park (51.9% ABV), finished in a refill Port octave and limited to just 67 bottles. Available exclusively to members of the Rare Find Vault, with an RRP of £695, the release is said to offer a rare opportunity to experience a particularly mature expression from the Orkney distillery.
Commenting on the launch, James Zorab of Rare Find, said: “Whiskies of this age demand the right cask and the right decisions over decades of maturation. The Macallan, Tormore and Deanston each tell a very different story, from the long influence of refill sherry oak to the contrasting character of first-fill Oloroso and second-fill PX. What connects them is the quality of the whisky after more than three decades in cask. These are not releases where age alone does the talking. Each has earned its place in this marque collection, and the opportunity to bottle whiskies of this calibre is becoming increasingly rare.”
The Rare Find Long Game collection will be available from selected specialist retailers from November 6th. The Highland Park 1989 vintage will be available to pre-order exclusively to Rare Find Vault members from October 30th.
