The Islay-based Bruichladdich Distillery has announced the launch of its latest Yellow Submarine release, as part of the Hebridean distillery’s 25th anniversary celebrations.
Bruichladdich Yellow Submarine III – Reclassified (54.2% ABV) is a 14 Year Old unpeated single malt Scotch whisky, produced using 100% Scottish barley and matured in a combination of first-fill Bourbon barrels and first and second-fill French red wine casks.
The latest release pays tribute to the distillery’s irreverent early years, when a wayward Ministry of Defence submarine was discovered off the coast of Islay in 2005. An exact replica of the lost submersible still stands proudly within the distillery grounds today.
The series was born from a notorious mix-up in the early 2000s, when US Military Intelligence mistakenly flagged Bruichladdich as a potential site for weapons of mass destruction. The distillery responded to the bureaucratic blunder with humour rather than outrage.
Bruichladdich Yellow Submarine III – Reclassified, is the latest iteration of the cult classic, following: Yellow Submarine: Whisky of Mass Distinction in 2005 and Yellow Submarine II: The Legend Resurfaces in 2018.
Created by Master Blender Adam Hannett, Bruichladdich Yellow Submarine III – Reclassified, is said to offer aromas of honeyed oats, buttery shortbread, nutmeg, hazelnut and gentle ginger spice on the nose. The palate delivers notes of orange zest, honeysuckle, apple, pear, crème brûlée and a touch of sea salt.
Commenting on the launch, Gareth Brown, Global Marketing Director at Bruichladdich, said: “The Yellow Submarine series captures the spirit of Bruichladdich in its early years – inventive, a bit rebellious and always up for a good story. In the early days, we didn’t have big budgets or slick marketing; we had a tight-knit team, a recovering old distillery and a bright yellow submarine parked outside.”
Gareth, continued: “Bringing Yellow Submarine back for our 25th anniversary is about honouring that spirit. It’s a reminder that great whisky can be refined in the glass, but it doesn’t have to take itself too seriously. This release nods to our past, to the people who backed us when we were just finding our feet, and to the sense of fun that still runs through everything we do.”
Bruichladdich Yellow Submarine III – Reclassified, is now available via the distillery’s website and selected specialist retailers, for a RRP of £100.00.
